Grantee Spotlight: Downtown Springdale Alliance
Downtown Springdale Revitalization Project
Endeavor provided a grant to support the revitalization of Downtown Springdale by creating a park-like setting between Emma Avenue and Johnson Avenue that will serve as a Gateway to the town center. Ultimately, the plan is to reestablish downtown Springdale as a central community gathering space by restoring a natural, historical, and cultural sense of place, and by attracting new businesses and experiences for residents and visitors to frequent and enjoy.
Downtown Springdale used to be a vibrant place to shop, gather, dine, and seek entertainment, but it has languished for decades as traffic has moved toward I-49 and no longer routes through the city, causing a significant decrease in economic activity and viability. Shiloh Square is no longer adequately serving the need for a community gathering space and fewer events are being held in the center of town.
- Boosting the local economy by contributing toward an expected $20 million total public investment in downtown Springdale will provide a 1.5% annual return on investment resulting from new business activity, private development, and job creation (according to a March 2014 report from Econsult Solutions).
- Creating a vibrant experience district and unique sense of place by attracting festivals, events, and street activities will help ensure people want to visit and spend time and money downtown and will also offer access to trails and amenities that nurture a healthy, active lifestyle.
- Catalyzing other investments from individuals, corporations, and foundations interested in the successful future of downtown Springdale.
- Advancing the Northwest Arkansas Regional Development Strategy’s goal to create thriving downtowns in each of the five major cities along the I-49 corridor. Strong downtowns across the region will help position Northwest Arkansas as both a tourism and business relocation destination, as well as a place people want to call home.
